Why I Served Others

I am thankful to God and to the Concerned Christian Men for this honor. However, l am just a servant doing what I have been commanded to do. It is said I am the founder, but I received a vision of what this ministry could be, and all l have done is be obedient to the vision, Christ is the founder! Many faithful men have made contributions to this effort, but I always felt responsible to the ministry. The ministry always came first at the cost of relationships, finances, even health concerns. I believe this work is critical to the least of these; the African American male: abandoned by natural fathers, misunderstood, sabotaged by miseducation, and cursed by poverty, crime infestations, drug culture, and apathy. The Concerned Christian Men are on the battlefield for our Lord. I want to thank every young man over the last 18 years who trusted us to mentor them. Those that allowed me the opportunity to feel the joy and pain of fatherhood. In many ways I fall short, but the good news is that God can use even flawed individuals to do a great work. I have received far more than I’ve given to this work, so I highly recommend it to both men and women. Work with our youth, give them hope, our young girls are having the same problems the boys are having. We are at a critical point in our history, if we are people of faith then let us show our faith through our works. The fortunes of our people look bleak only to those who have no faith, we have an Advocate and through his faith we will never be ashamed or defeated. Fathers to the Fatherless and Tough men for a Tough mission were always the goal, if we show our love by serving the least of these, then we’ll be something greater, saints of the most High God.”

George D. Glenn was one of the founders and the president of Concerned Christian Men (CCM), a youth organization in Chicago that focuses on mentoring young men from ages 6-17 and providing them with strong leadership and guidance.  Since 1996, over 40,000 young boys have participated in CCM programs, and “Mr. Glenn” has personally impacted every one of them. He was determined to serve as a “Father to the Fatherless.”

George Glenn was a Harvard-educated native of Chicago. He was trained in the Chicago Public School system, both at Ruggles Elementary and at Senn High School. Before forming the Concerned Christian Men, George spent 24 years in the investment banking industry, working with William Blair & Company, Merrill Lynch, Drexel Burnham Lambert, and Lehman Brothers.

Over the years, his heart was moved by God as he saw the degradation and disintegration that he observed in his community on the South Side of Chicago.  Due to both rising youth crime rates and fewer urban students graduating high school, he realized the need for young boys to interact with positive leaders and male role models in inner-city communities and his focus shifted from investment banking to serving his community. In 1996, he and other men from Carter Temple CME Church created the  Christian Methodist Men (CMM), soon after they left Carter Temple to form the Concerned Christian Men, a youth organization designed to help develop the moral and spiritual integrity of these boys and shape them into contributing members of society.  George believed that with the right training and programming, Christian men from within the community could fill this need for role models, and he worked tirelessly for 20+ years to make his vision a reality.

The George Dewey Glenn Legacy Fund was established to honor, preserve and expand the legacy of Mr. Glenn, as he was called by thousands of young boys in CCM’s extensive programs.  Funds raised will be used to provide:

  1. GDG LEGACY SCHOLARSHIPS TO DESERVING GRADUATING SENIORS WHO HAVE MAINTAINED THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN CCM PROGRAMS SINCE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

  2. INCENTIVES AND AWARDS TO YOUNG MEN WHO PARTICIPATE IN PROGRAMS SUCH AS THE THOMPKINS-STIMLEY SUMMER CAMP, HIGHTOWER ORATORY CONTEST, AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY CHALLENGE, STOCK MARKET CHALLENGE, AND PAY FOR A’S.

  3. LIMITED SUPPORT WHERE MERITED FOR YOUNG BOYS WHO REQUIRE EXTRAORDINARY SUPPORT TO PARTICIPATE IN OUR PROGRAMS.

George Glenn exemplified our credo of Serving as Fathers to the Fatherless.  Your contributions to the GDG Legacy Fund will enable the Concerned Christian Men to carry on the legacy of our Founder for generations to come.  CCM and the Glenn Family thank you for your condolences and for your support.
